The helpline is staffed by trained experts including veterinarians, pharmacologists, toxicologists and emergency care specialists. They can help with not only possible poisoning in dogs and cats but also birds, large animals and exotic pets.
The website offers valuable information on how to keep your pet safe. It includes articles and videos about potential dangers to your pets including plants, certain food items and what you may have lying around at home or in your car.
Here’s what to do if you think your pet has been poisoned:
- Remove your pet from the area.
- Check to make sure your pet is safe: breathing and acting normally.
- Do NOT give any home antidotes.
- Do NOT induce vomiting without consulting a vet or Pet Poison Helpline.
- Call Pet Poison Helpline at 800-213-6680.
- If veterinary attention is necessary, contact your veterinarian or emergency veterinary clinic immediately.
